Sunday and Monday

Hello friends and family! Sorry that the blog posts aren't as frequent as before! In Nanchang we were in the room so much ... and here we are out and about more and the internet is less reliable. All is well here! We are VERY ready to come home!

But it is sweet to have this special time with Kate. She is super playful and she loves to mimic us -opening our mouth wide, writing with a pen, screwing on a bottle top, etc ... she watches with these big bright curious eyes! She takes it all in! The Chinese people always comment about her big bright eyes. She is very smiley and interactive. We can't wait for you to meet her! She is starting to learn that if she cries, we come running! So while she used to go to bed so easily, we just laid her down... now it's starting to be more difficult! You aren't supposed to "baby wise" these babies (which is the eat/sleep method we used with our other two). And when she cries, all you think of is that she was in an orphanage for 15 months and you just need to pick her up!!! So we've basically been spoiling her completely ; ) But she is so young that I think she has really mostly forgotten about the orphanage (this may be wishful thinking on my part) but now we're into regular toddler behavior... so we are starting to let her cry a bit more now and then. Not in a cruel way, but just in a healthy way - to transition her a little bit to home life with 2 sisters! It's gonna be pretty crazy for awhile I imagine!!! ; )) Ok... here are some pictures and explanations from the last few days!

Ok, so below you see the view from our room during the day and a pic of the walk-in closet/dressing area. So nice! Some of our DEAREST friends, Greg and Ginger, live fairly near where we are so they flew over to spend a few days with us! It has been a huge blessing to have them here. What sweet time together! They brought their two boys, which has been fun for Kate too! There's a picture of Ginger's feet when we laid out by the pool (not in swim suits... it's a little cold for us for swimming, but nice to sit out in the sunshine!!!!)

More pictures of our room... even the bottled waters were in little Chinese outfits! TV by bathtub, workout bike and little study room... so cool!

There's a picture of Kate on the bus (our agency arranges for a bus to take us from place to place - it's all very organized!). Then there's Ginger and Crosby on the bus... and a couple pics of the view from our room at night. So pretty - fountains, etc.

Though she often pretends that she can't because she wants to be held, Kate can stand! And walk holding onto something. We catch her doing it now and then and she immediately sits down then plops down on her back as if to say "oops! nope, can't do that. you'd better hold me!" haha. and we do of course! The breakfasts are so yummy!!!! It's a gorgeous view - here we are eating with our sweet friends! The big group pic below is our whole travel group from our agency. There are 7 families adopting and they all have such neat stories. So awesome!!!

We went to an international church on Sunday - it was awesome! The Chinese people aren't allowed to come - you have to show your international passport at the door to be sure you aren't Chinese. It was such a neat and diverse church! Very cool. Then some packages of Lays chips with odd flavors...

Ginger, who is amazing, made me homemade gluten free banana bread! How she found the ingredients over here I have no idea. I am LOVING it. SO SWEET! And there's a pic of our food stash... and then one of Chinese premium huggies diapers - just as a reminder to myself and any of the rest of you that you need to bring ALL AMERICAN diapers because even the nicest ones over here don't work! I feel the wetness starting to leak out seconds after Kate goes to the bathroom in one of these! I just brought enough US diapers for the first week. That was a mistake! Also, I didnt' bring enough formula. Reminder to myself and others - if you do this trip. you need to bring 2 cans/containers of formula. The imported formula here was $60 US dollars...so now Kate is just getting weak American formula as I try to make this last till the end of the trip! I think we will make it, but next time (if there is a next time) I'll bring more!

Kate in her Chipoa (spelled wrong I'm sure - traditional Chinese dress). I got the girls a lot of these! It was a lot of decision making (which I'm really bad at) and a stressful shopping trip (thank the Lord for Ginger!) but I got through it. Wish I could bring you all Chipoas for your girls but my sanity can't stand the stress of trying to shop for too many of these things! Just to chaotic and crazy! But they are super cute. And the pants outfit is so cute too! You can see her piggies sticking out of it!

Our hotel has a beautiful garden with huge waterfalls. We walked around it last night and loved it! Fish, flowers, paths, so fun!

More pics in the garden - that's the hotel in the background.

Jude (one of Greg and Ginger's boys) playing the drums with his chop sticks ; ) And a cute little outfit for Kate... and some little bracelts for about $1 US dollar each for the girls. Not a great pic b/c she moved her hand, but I love how Kate holds onto me when she's in the sling! So cute! And I've started packing... we're here for awhile longer, but I'm ready to come home so I thought I'd pack! Haha.

Some pics of shopping finds... a turquise necklace for each of our girls when they turn 16? 13? 10? We'll see! And a pearl necklace for Kate on her wedding day (the girl was knotting each pearl individually and we were late to meet the bus, so I only got one for Kate! Might should get the other girls one today - we'll see!). Ginger got each of us this fun chunky bracelet. Then some Chipoas - I have some for them to play in and some nicer ones too. And I got a few sizes up so they'll hopefully fit for awhile!!! The shopping is crazy. If we go back today, I'll take more pics. It's crazy. Miss you all and can't wait to be home and for you to meet little Kate!!!!

We're not in Kansas anymore!

Throughout the trip we keep looking around and saying "we're not in Kansas anymore" ... which, we were never actually in Kansas, but you know what we mean! It's just all so new and different all the time! Sorry I haven't blogged in a few days! We left Nanchang, where I spent 3 days without leaving the room much at all, to Guangzhou, where we have been SUPER busy! But it's making the trip go much faster, so we're thankful for that ; )

First off, a few pics from our last day in Nanchang... so here is Kate. Pretending she doesn't crawl or walk ; ) Scooting all over the bed! Silly girl. She's sort of reverting back, which is totally fine and normal for these kids ; ) She's such a doll!!!!

Here are some pictures of her reaching for the beach ball! She really liked it!

Ok, a few more random pics... on the top right, that is our Lifeline travel group (us and the Wall family) with our guide, Mary, who sadly got cut mostly from the pic. We love mary and the Walls and it was a neat experience to walk through with them! On the bottom left is a pair of families from Hawaii. They each waited SIX years for their healthy baby girls. Both girls are 11 months old. They were pretty astonished that we'd only waited 15 months and Kate is so healthy! They were really sweet families. Kate likes my sunglasses ; ) and a pic in the elevator...

Oh, McDonald's... I don't think we will be able to eat you for a very long time! We ate there 3 times last week. Phew! The sweet Chinese McDonald's worker in the bottom right pic knew our order! They like to have their pictures taken with Americans and they always do the peace sign - they think pics with us are good luck. She was a great employee and James contemplated trying to get her to come to Alabama and work at Burger King!!! ; ))

Kate's first airplane flight was from Nanchang to Guangzhou! She was super active on the flight. She only cried once for a few minutes when her ears hurt. She is such a sweet little thing!

Then we get to Guangzhou and our new guides, Miko and Rebecca, meet us at the airport. There are other families too - 7 in all from our agency here in Guangzhou now. Each family spent the first week of their trip in their child's province and then everyone comes to Guangzhou for the second week because the US Consulate office that deals with adoptions is here. See our hotel? And we thought the last hotel was nice? This is CRAZY! Like hotel workers at the elevators pushing the buttons for you sort of crazy!!!! It's amazing!!!! We've never stayed anywhere this nice!!!!

Here are the papers that our guides gave us with our itinerary and the map on them - so cool and organized!!! I like schedules and lists ; )

Ok, I am missing pics of the entry to our room, the "workout area" and office area, and the bedroom... but Kate's asleep and I forgot to get those yesterday! But here are a few of our room! SO fancy! I think we have a suite, which we probably didn't need, but it wasn't much more expensive (maybe $40/night?) and we had just asked for suites b/c we heard we should - but in Guangzhou, for those of you traveling, you probably could just do a regular room! This is like 1000 square feet and amazing!!!!! See fun bathroom toiletries, awesome tub, cute toys/things in Kate's crib? So neat!

I'll try to post more room pics later. Also heated toilets and such! Really cool! Below are pics from our medical appointment with Kate! Is she sick? Ummmm ... we are instructed to say NO so we can immigrate back to the states! Which is true, thankfully, she is much better!!!! She doesn't like medical exams...  ;)) We saw 2 different docs and had a time at the nurses station (see their cute white caps??)

Some soldiers/police marched through with really big guns at one point. We've seen that in a few places. Very interested! Top left pic below is an awesome family adopting a 14 year old. She turned 14 on Nov 1 and you have to be adopted before your 14th bday, so they just came over here before getting travel approval and have prayed their way through this! they are awesome. Also hoping to get a second child who is 13 on this trip. The medical trip wore sweet Kate out!!!
And then we had a paper meeting to get our documents in order! Rebecca and Miko talked us through it. Each family sent one parent and it was crazy to get all the documents in order! But so great. Lifeline is so organized. The other families who had adopted before with other agencies said this was amazing to have help with this step and that the other agencies left them to do it on their own. Thank you, Lifeline! We love you! Ok, many more fun and exciting things to report, but I need to go get ready! We love and miss you all!!!

Helpful info for Nanchang, adopting a cleft baby, or eating gluten free

Ok, I keep falling asleep at like 7 pm and then waking up at 4 am... which is really so much better than sleeping for 3 hours a night - which is what I did the first few nights. It gives me a great opportunity to blog before James and Kate get up!

We leave Nanchang today (pronounced "Nan - chung") and I know a few of you are coming here soon to adopt. It's the provincial capital of the Jiangxi province, so if you adopt in that province, you will be in Nanchang for the first week of your trip. I wanted to write down a few things about this leg of the adventure for the others of you who are adopting... this could be a super long post. So if you aren't adopting from China or from this province, feel free to skip this post! I was super blessed to have three friends who I met through Facebook and Yahoo chat groups who came to Nanchang in the last few weeks - so I knew most of this already. But here goes...

HOTEL - We are at the Galactic Peace. James had tried to get our agency to put us somewhere else because we'd heard some mixed reports on it... but they like to have everyone at the same place for ease with the guide. And really, the location is perfect. The Crown Plaza is out of the way and you wouldn't be able to walk everywhere. The hotel is super nice. Pool, workout room, spa, etc. I have a sick baby, so we didn't do the pool, but if you do, you'll need a swim cap for each person swimming. The room is super nice and the bathroom too. They had toietry bags with 2 toothbrushes, bath supplies, shower caps, all sorts of goodies. They give us 4 large bottles of water each day when they make up our room (they give us 2 extra than they give the other family we're here with - I'm thinking it's because we are making bottles?). There is a hot pot in the room. It heats up water. No microwave! So we've  eaten mostly oatmeal, rice bowls, etc - things you just add hot water to. For bottles, I fill it 3/4 with room temp bottled water then 1/4 boiling water and shake up. The babies seem to like really hot formula! The breakfast in the hotel is pretty good. I eat scrambled eggs with onions in them (you can choose toppings like an omelet bar. the other things were things that looked sketchy so I do the onions. when I didn't choose a topping, they don't cook the eggs all the way, so i choose the onions just b/c they seem to cook the omelet more!). No cheese. They have hash browns, bacon, sausage, and pancakes. They have various fruits. I just eat the hash browns, eggs, and watermelow (because you're only supposed to have fruit that is peeled). I'm not sure about eating pork here ; ) But I'm sure it's fine. James has the pancakes. They have bananas too. We don't get their drinks, although I'm sure they're fine. We are in super lock-down mode with the food, more on that later. Kate (15 months) eats all that stuff too. They have hard boiled eggs too - which the orphanage said was her favorite food - but we can't get her to eat them for us. We've cut them every which way with no luck. Oh weell! The hotel rooms can get HOT. I mean like 85 degrees hot. So bring shorts and a tank top in case you have a couple days of that. Our thermostat worked fine the first few days and now it's just hot in here! There is wireless internet and a hard wire to plug into. You'll need a VPN because they block most sites - so if you want to get onto a blog, facebook, etc, you need a VPN which somehow routes you through a US connection or something. There is a safe in the room that you can leave your money and passports and important documents in. There is a fridge and freezer. We have 3 TVs (one in the bath tub!). Since we have the baby with us, they had a crib in here and a baby tub and a baby potty. i had them take out the tub and potty because I think the potty smelled bad and they took up a lot of space. Although, more on this later, but the orphanage people that James talked to yesterday (he went to the orphanage! I desperately want him to do a post! He learned so much!) but they say Kate is potty trained and can walk holding things. She won't do either for us - yesterday she was pretending she didn't even sit up! She would smile and lay back on you! She just wants to be held. But she's basically been busted! Apparently she can do all sorts of things ; ) Silly girl!!!

Ok, you don't want to drink the water anywherei in this country. So we use bottled water to wash off dishes and bottles, brush our teeth, etc. We have hand wipes to wash our hands. We don't use the faucets. You have to shower in the water (nice hot showers! there's not much to do here in the room with a sick little one so I've taken 2 a day!!! hehe ; ) so you just have to try to keep the water out of your mouth. Again, we are way more cautious than we have to be probably, but we are trying to be really careful (I have an immune deficiency so I'm glad to even have gotten clearance to come! So not taking any chances ; ) What else... of the BEDS! They are hard. Like lying on a rug on the floor. but higher! Seriously! But honestly, we have liked them! Our backs hurt much less than they do when we're home! Even the crib doesn't have a mattress! It has like the equivalent of a comforter-depth thing that has a mini-flat sheet folded around it. Molly would throw that whole thing right out of the bed, but Kate is fine with it. The cribs are in the "middle" height setting. For those of you without kids, my experience has been that cribs have 3 settings and you move the part where the baby sleeps up and down. You start with it up so that when you put the baby in, you don't have to lean over so much. Then as the baby starts to roll over and sit up, you move the mattress part down a notch so they don't come out of the crib. Then when they can stand, the crib base would be at the lowest setting - or your child will fall out of the crib (which they may very well do anyway...). So these cribs are set in the middle setting and i'm not sure if you could have them move it down one? Kate can stand and could easily get out of this thing, but she doesn't. She was in a similar one at the orphanage, so maybe they are just well disciplined not to? But if we had Molly here, this would not work. So if you are bringing an American baby over... the crib thing may need some additional attention! Maybe you'd put them in a bed. We have a sitting room area, a desk area, the bedroom, a full bath, and a half bath. It's super nice. We got a suite - it was recommended to us and it's been great. I haven't seen the other rooms but I think this is much better.

The only slightly odd thing is that I guess there is some prostitution here. You'll get 5-15 business cards each night slid under your door of half naked women! James isn't nearly as concerned as he should be! Just kidding. We have told the guide and the front desk a few times and they have tried to fix it - some nights we get none, some nights we get lots. You get a newspaper under your door too in English - it's really interesting. More on that from a more secure local! Hehe. It seems that our whole floor is American families adopting, so I think they try to put us together and you can't get to your floor on the elevator without your room key - so i think they try to cut down on the prostitution cards by putting us all together so there aren't others on the floor too. It's not threatening or anything. The other family we're with has a 14 year old son with them, so that's more alarming just to explain that and have that garbage coming in. It's distrurbing for sure!

The people at the hotel are super nice. They speak a little English. We've managed to get by just fine knowing zero Chinese words, but next time I might learn like 20 words just to help. If we get in a pickle, we call our guide and she translates. We have Mary as our guide and she is wonderful.

FOOD - I've touched on this a bit already. I eat gluten free so it's been a bit crazy. I've eaten almost every meal in the room with things I brought from home (tuna fish, rice noodle bowls, GoPicnics from Target, nuts, PB&J with GF bread - we brought one gluten free loaf and one regular loaf for James, oatmeal, granola bars, fruit gummy snacks, etc. We eat the breakfast at the hotel. James has had Papa Johns pizza (they deliever to the room and taste mostly normal he says) 3 times for dinner). I've done room service and ordered a beef and rice meal 2 times. We've eaten at McDonald's twice. That's been it! The american/italian restaurant that used to be here has apparently closed. We've heard not to eat street vendor food (although the family we're with, who lived in China, goes out for meals and can eat really cheap and they love all the food here! but they are WAY more adventurous that we are and have no food sensitivity/allergy issues...). I have fomula for Kate - I should have brought more. She takes 5-6 ounces four times a day and I have one cannister of formula and I should have brought 2 of those. I have a 6 pack of ready-made formula for the flights. She loves yogurt drops - I have 4 packages and wish i'd brought 6. I have 2 cans of the gerber cheese puff things and she likes those too - not as much as the yogurt drops. I have one bag of Cheerios and that is a hit too. I have four of the squeeze food things of prunes (thanks, Rebecca!) and I do one every couple days because i have heard that as these babies switch to American foods/formula, they get constipated. I have squeeze apple sauces too - maybe 6 of them - and she likes those.

IN-COUNTRY FLYING - Today we fly from Nanchang to Guangzhou. It's an hour and a half flight we think. We don't have tickets or time info - they never gave it to us - but I guess we don't need it! We just know we are supposed to meet the guide in the lobby with all our stuff at 3 pm. James is a details guy so he would probably rather know flight numbers and such, but we are fine! Hehe. He really likes to know WHY we have to do each thing - WHY we stay in this city for a week, WHY we need to have this hotel, etc. Ok, back to flying, our guide says that we each can fly with 20 kg of baggage (and the baby gets 10 kg). So multiply by 2.2 to get pounds. But that isn't per bag, it's total per family. So we can fly with 50 kg total. That could be one 10 kg bag and one 40 kg bag. I couldn't find this info stateside since i didn't know what airline (still don't) we're flying, but that's the scoop according to our guide!

The CITY - It's a neat city! 7 million people! And we've never heard of it. Crazy! The family we're with has done all the sight-seeing with and without the guide - cool buildings, light shows at night, pretty park, etc. There is a 50 story high ferris wheel here that was the highest one in the world for a time - now it's #3 I think. Takes 30 minutes to get all the way around! We have had a sick baby - and really, I like to play and bond with her in the room more than I like to put her in the sling all day... so we haven't done any of the fun stuff. Well, we have done LOTS of fun stuff but no sight-seeing ; ) In Guangzhou, if she gets better, I'm sure we'll be out and about more! Just having a new baby and doing bottles and such is pretty crazy! The city is smogging. This makes James a bit claustrophobic at times! Some days we look out our windows and can't see very far. Others you can see way far and the smog seems mostly cleared out (you still can't see sky or horizen every) so it's pretty different. Just looks like a gray sky all the time. Crossing the street is hard. you will want to bring a sling for I'd say any baby 3 and under. A stroller would be too dangerous - the baby would be too far from you with cars and mopeds buzzing INCHES from you. If we had all three of our girls, we would have to carry all three across streets. Maybe even down the streets too. It would have been HARD to have our 2 and 4 year olds here with us, honestly. The 4 year old MAYBE. But there is no mac n cheese, lots of adoption-y things to get done, busy dangerous streets, etc. Would have been hard. But fun to have the family all together... just a tough call! It's nice to have this time just with Kate though. Although we miss our 2 big girls so much! It's almost like vacation just to have Kate and lay on the bed with her and giggle and tickle her and all that. Would be much more of a job with all three of our little people. No early morning blogging, etc ; )

WALMART, etc - There is a Walmart! Other than everything being in Chinese, it looked pretty normal. We got bananas and bottled water (you need a bit more than what they give you in the room). There is also an RT Mart that the other family went to. It really helps to have your guide with you - she can find what you need at Walmart, help you check out, etc. I'll have to get more diapers and formula probably before too long from Walmart (maybe I can go this morning or I'll wait till we get to Guangzhou). There is a Papa Johns that delivers. It is in the same mall as the Walmart. There is a KFC in that same complex too. The McDonalds is near the RT mart and is maybe 3-4 blocks from teh hotel. We walked both times we went there. The guide took us to Walmart in the van, so I'm not sure how far it is from the hotel.

TOYS - I brought a couple books, a couple music toys, chew toys, doll, etc. her favorite is the stacking cups. She loves them! LOVES them. Others recommended this, so I think in general they are a hit! I brought a sheet to put on the floor so she would have a play area. I ended up using the comforter that they had for us to use on her crib instead b/c it's thick and soft. I just brought a few light blankets that I use on her in the crib.

LAUNDRY - We've done laundry 2 times. This seems like a lot, but since we brought all our food (and seriously 60 medicines) we didn't have tons of room for clothes! They charge per item - about 45 US per item if we use the hotel laundry and about half that if we ask the guide to take it to a site outside the hotel. We did it both ways. Super expensive both times, but half the cost to do off site. Our guide was gone with James at the orphanage yesterday so I just did a few things at the hotel - I had no idea it would be so $$! That's where a little Chinese language may have been helpful! I have started stripping off Kate's clothes before she eats and using hotel towels to wipe things up (not burp clothes) so we don't have as much to wash. It's hard with a baby! They just generate lots of laundry! And with the room and everywhere else so HOT, we sweat more so I don't want to re-wear things. I have Tide sink packets but I haven't used them. That would be a good option too if you thought something could dry quickly. I have a plastic bib for Kate that just rinses off - that's been great!

Cleft lip/palate - just a word on this in case any of you are adopting a little one with cleft lip and palate. Kate's lip is repaired and her palate is still open. She eats normally and you'd never know it was open. It doesn't hurt her. We've only seen it a couple times when she cries. I think some people clean out that area by squirting water up there, but we haven't done that. It would upset her and she seems to be fine. I brush her teeth like normal. I brought fast flow nipples that go on the Playtex drop in bottles and that has worked great. The liquid comes out if you just hold the bottle upside down. Kate can't make a suction so you'd either have to have a bottle that drips like that or one that squeezes into her mouth. I have sippy cups that she could bite on and get the liquid out, but she likes the bottles better. The sippys she hasn't figured out yet. We also have a medicine dropper that we use to get liquid in her. She loves to drink apple juice that way! She seems to like hot things from the bottle and not cold (water/apple juice) but that just may be her... Food and liquid reportedly comes out of these children's noses, but it hasn't come out of Kate's yet except for one time when when she was drinking her bottle at a funny angle a drop came out of her nose. Her nose has been pretty flattened from the lip surgery (common I hear, they will have to fix that I think) so she doens't seem to have much airflow out of her nose - she can mostly breath through her nose while taking a bottle though - but it's a very very small slit on each side. So maybe that's why the food doesn't come out!

MEDICINES - Ok, I'm writing more on packing now! But while I'm at it, the medicines we've used are: Zithromax for Kate (liquid form, prescribed by International adoption clinic doc, used for her cough/cold symptoms), Ibuprofen for her fever (we also have tylenol but haven't used it - Dr Chambers recommended we use the Ibuprofen - we called her, had her listen to Kate's cough, etc), Malaria meds for both me and James, Delsym cough syrup (1/4 tsp every 12 hours, just to help Kate sleep - or she is coughing all night long), Augmentin (I'm on that as prophylaxis). Other things we brought and haven't used: Benadryl liquid and tablets (we will use this on plane home for Kate - Dr. recommends!), Pedialyte, Immodium, pepto, tums, monostat, lice meds, scabies meds, benadryl anti-itch cream, nystatin and desitin for diaper rash, AZO in case of bladder infection, zophran, Midol, tylenol cold, tylenol PM, ambien (i should have taken this), pink eye med, epi pens (we're a bit over-prepared ; ) and i figured i'm a nurse, so i'll have everything in case anyone in our travel group needs anything), pedialax or something like that for constipation - i had pharmacist come out and help me choose all these meds, first aid kit (band-aids, gauze, tape, neosporin), electrolyte tabs for adults, Zithromax for me and for James (so some of these are prescription meds - ask the travel doc for them when you get your shots or ask your regular doc ; ), thermacare heating pads (these were recommended to us and if we had done more sight-seeing and worn sling all day - especially if we weren't used to carrying a baby - these would be great), aveeno oatmeal bath for dry skin (kate's skin is fine, but many babies have really dry skin), lotion, baby tear-free body wash and shampoo ... and that's all I can think of for now. Our meds are packed up but if I notice others, I'll add them!

Ok, that's all I can think of for now. If other useful info comes to mind, I'll add it. Hope that helps those of you who are journeying a similar path!!! Take care!

THANK YOU!

While we've been gone, SO MANY of you have helped us care for Anne and Molly! Y'all have done everything from baby-sitting, to having play groups, to taking meals, to taking gifts, shopping for groceries, taking them to church and school and trick-or-treating, etc, etc. It's been such an act of sacrifice and we appreciate you loving on our big girls! We miss them sooooo much and it means the world that they are in good hands and being loved on. THANK YOU! And we have a week left so many more of you will serve us and them ... so thank you in advance. We are just so grateful. Y

ou have sent us photos and videos of some of the happenings so I wanted to include some of those! I'm sure I missed some great ones - the internet is going really slow and the print on the screen is super tiny so this won't be perfect ; ) And because of how our VPN is working, I can't actually hear the volume on the videos... I can hear it on the iPad, but James has that ; ) So I'm hoping I'm choosing the right videos and that this works! If not, I will edit this post later ; )

Happy Halloween!

We have had a good day with litlte Kate! She's still pretty sick - chest cold - so we opted to stay in the hotel and not do the sight-seeing today. We did a little of our own physical therapy with her ... trying to coax her to stand with cheerios and yogurt drops on the couch ; ) And encouraging some tummy time and crawling. She has tiny little legs and feet! None of the shoes we brought fit her - so I'm guessing she is in like a size 2 shoe? or 6-12 months? She tolerated these red shoes for a few minutes then kicked them off ; ) But she did great with the standing! Sweet girl! She will do just about anything for yogurt drops ; ))

We skyped a bit in the morning - here she is in front of the iPad. Anne and Molly were concerned about her lack of clothes ; ) When we take her out, we have to put her in long sleeves and long pants - even though it is warm here ... the culture is to keep children very warm. We ended up going out last night for some dinner again, and her pants had ridden up her leg a bit in the sling... and an older lady came and pulled them down so they covered her sock and gave me a little mini-lecture in Chinese about keeping her covered (or at least I think that's what she was saying!). She was very kind about it but it was sort of awkward! ; ) It is so HOT in buildings here! The restaurant was I PROMISE 85 degrees. Sweat was dripping down our faces! We sweat through our clothes! And you look around and all the sweet Chinese people are in puffer jackets. They think it is so cold outside right now (maybe 75)... it's so crazy!

Kate sucks her thumb and then plays with her shirt sleeve with the other hand. Below she is playing with James - hitting him in the head with cups, yanking his nose, etc. She has started wanting to feed us what she is eating. She'll put a Cheerio in our mouths and smile. So cute!

It's crazy to think it was Halloween here! I had brought her costume and I'd meant to check with the other families from other agencies about some room-to-room trick or treating but didn't end up seeing them! Oh well. Kate dressed up as a cow in the room and we had fun ; ) Her friend Mary was a cow last year and I loved the costume! Back home, her sisters are dressing up like cowgirls as I write! Well, they have probably ditched those costumes and are in princess gear... but that's ok. We'll dress them all up in cow apparel sometime next month and come knocking on your doors! Save some candy! hehe!

Sweet Kate was fussing at bedtime so I laid down next to her after my shower and held her little hand. James got some pics. Apparently I fell asleep but Kate didn't - she just kept her hand in mine! So cute ; ) She is really precious!

Hope y'all have a Happy Halloween!!!! Send pics of your little trick-or-treaters or put on facebook! We'll be excited to see ; ) Take care. We're officially halfway through the trip!

Tuesday Happenings

We are one day closer to being home! Yea! And last night we slept better! It was the first time I'd slept more than 3 hours in a night. WOW! Thank you for your prayers! James skyped in with his bible study study guys and I know they were all praying. THANK YOU! Kate had a better night too. She coughed and coughed so finally I gave her some cough medicine and she slept soundly and is still asleep. Yea! Sweet girl! We ended up calling the International Adoption Clinic doctor in Birmingham yesterday, Dr. Chambers. We just wanted to go over Kate's cold symptoms and make sure we were on the right track there. Also, and I know many of you have adopted so you know about this, but Kate will alternate from being super engaged and playful to being reserved and almost motionless. We just wanted to make sure this was normal - the doc said it completely is. It's just a total shock to them to make a transition like this! We sent the doc some pics and video and she thinks Kate is doing just fine. She'll have lots of labs drawn, be tested for all sorts of genetic syndromes, and evaluated by a team of docs at the clinic when we get home (like they do for all adopted babies) just so we make sure we are caring for her the right way! But so far so good ; )

Also, we just wanted to thank all of you for caring for our Anne and Molly while we are gone! It's really too many people to list, but we are so humbled by your love and care for them and for us. We've loved all the videoes, photos, and updates you've sent. Thank you so much. More than ever, we feel so grateful for such an amazing community! Thank you!!!

I'm gonna try to attach lots of photos and videos so we'll see how it goes... sorry if the videos don't end up working!

Below in the top two pictures, Kate was meeting Anne and Molly for the first time! So cute. Then there was an article in the China newspaper about the craziness of crossing the street here ; ) And then there's a picture of Kate eating watermelon - she can eat a LOT of watermelon!!! She loves it!

Everyone had said to bring stacking cups - apparently, children adopted from China just love stacking cups across the board! And they were right! She loves them and would play with them all day long!

She will crawl for yogurt drops ; ) By this point she was really working up a sweat! It's a lot of work having to crawl across the bed for yogurt drops and entertain your new american parents!!! We think she is just now learning to regulate her tempertaure to the way we dress her and keep the room temperature since the Chinese tend to keep rooms very hot (like 80 degrees) and children very bundled. So we're thinking that's the reason she breaks out in a sweat every now and then! Her body is getting used to this new temperature stuff!

Below is our offical adoption form! She is ours! So amazing and exciting. And you see a bag and some folded laundry - we had our laundry done! It was very expensive and if I made $70 every time I did a load of laundry, it would be fabulous! But they did a great job and everything was folded so nicely. It is all damp, because dryers are sort of new here and they use a lot of elecricity, so they don't dry things all the way. I gave Kate a little hair trim! Just to straighten out the back ; ) Sweet girl. She sits more still than Molly does (no surprise ; ) so it was super easy! Anne is easy too - but her hair is wavier so it's a bit tricky. Molly and Kate both have super straight hair. You see the pic of Kate sucking her little thumb? She does this when she is tired. And she puts the other hand right up by the wrist of the hand that has the thumb in her mouth. So sweet. And she can hold her own bottle. Sweet girl. I'm hoping they held her anyway when they fed her and that they didn't prop it up...

Ok, Wessel readers, close your eyes! This next part is going to be upsetting! We went to McDonalds! Eeek. Now, it was ONLY because at this point we are so hungry and there was no Burger King!!! Hehe. And boy, was it good!!! Not as good, of course, as if there had been a Burger King! But we have had no microwave - just a hot pot - and we've been eating granola bars, gluten free luncheables, rice bowls, PB&Js... so this was a super fun treat! We walked there with our new friends the Walls. They are so cool and they are practically locals! They can find their way around and they speak enough Chinese to get us anywhere, so it's fun to go exploring with them. Here we are with Ronald McDonald and then eating inside. Kate had her first bite of ice cream! She winced because I don't think she's ever had cold food (they don't do cold food here really) but then her eyes got really big and she opened her mouth wide open for another bite! And another, and another... James had the ice cream and was feeding her and she was mesmerized - just watching his every move with that ice cream. Hilarious! And some diaper changing and more cup playing...

Below we have more watermelon eating, some BBQ chip eating, her first ever pizza, and a big smile!

Here's a video of some cup stacking action...

Some crawling to the yogurt drops...

Drinking our bottle... with a cute little piggy in the air...

Some sweet little Chinese girls in front of the laundromat (we went with the Walls to take their laundry - we had sent ours out a different method through our guide). The little girls have clearly started English classes at school and would say token English phrases "Hello. Nice to meet you" etc... here they are saying "Nice to meet you too" in unison - so cute!

Walking back from McDonald's last night - it was probably a quarter mile from the hotel. Fun to be out at night and see more of the Chinese culture. The people are so nice and we we feel completely safe everywhere we go. I wouldn't want to walk down many unfamiliar city streets back in the states at night... but this felt totally safe! So crazy.

So that's everything for now! Hope everyon has a Happy Halloween. Can't wait to get home and see you all!!! We love you!
